Preservation of Eye Care Quality and Surgical Standards in North Carolina

Background

In 2017, a bill was introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly to allow non-physicians to perform certain types of eye surgery.  This legislation posed a risk to eye care quality and surgical standards for the citizens of North Carolina.

SPS's Role

SPS was retained to serve as strategic consultants on behalf of ophthalmology professional societies.  SPS conducted public opinion research; held a press conference; generated a substantial amount of earned media; engaged key influential opinion leaders statewide; produced and placed paid media; and conceptualized and executed a digital campaign.

The Result

SPS led a coordinated strategy which derailed legislation that posed a threat to eye care quality and surgical standards in North Carolina.

“SPS was a valuable strategic partner in the fight to preserve eye safety and surgical standards for the citizens of North Carolina. Paul Shumaker and Dee Stewart were involved in critical decisions we made throughout the campaign. Their expertise and years of experience made the winning difference for us.”
